2015 Cherry Gove Vineyard Pinot Noir
In the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range, 20 acre Cherry Grove is fastidiously cared for by Bob & Irene Van Steenburg with their daughter Mary. At 250’ to 550 ' elevation, it’s mostly Willakenzie and Melbourne soils, surrounded and protected by 30 acres of mature Douglas fir trees. It’s managed by one of the valley’s best viticulturists, Stirling Fox, and has been LIVE certified since 2007.
In the Cellar
The grapes were hand-picked and then each cluster was also sorted by hand. A 5 day cold soak was followed by 21 days of gentle punch downs, twice daily. Indigenous yeast created the fermentation, and the clean ripe fruit gave us no problems. This pretty wine was aged for 23 months in neutral oak barrels on it’s lees (sur lie) before resting in bottle for 8 additional months prior to release in April of 2018. A minimal amount of sulfur is the only addition to this wine.
The warm, extended growing season of 2015 brought us a second straight harvest of exceptional quality. A warmer than average winter led to early budbreak and nearly six months of charmed growing conditions. Just before harvest, the vineyards were able to enjoy needed rain, but then skies cleared up for us to pick fruit. Starting in mid September harvest began. These wines are bright, lush, a bit concentrated and giving.
